Thousands Flee Wildfires in New Mexico, State of Emergency Declared

Two rapidly spreading wildfires in New Mexico have forced over 7,000 residents to evacuate, as state officials declared a state of emergency on 18 June 2024. The blazes, which erupted Monday, have devastated approximately 500 structures in a mountainous region near the town of Ruidoso, about a 90-minute drive from the Mexican border.

The wildfires, fueled by dry conditions and high winds, have encircled Ruidoso, compelling a hasty evacuation. Authorities report that the fires, originating in a rural area, are moving uncontrollably, threatening further damage and displacement.

Emergency services are working tirelessly to contain the fires and aid those affected. Shelters have been established for evacuees, and additional resources are being mobilized to combat the blaze.

New Mexico’s governor has urged residents to stay informed and follow evacuation orders, emphasizing that the safety of the community is the top priority. The situation remains dire, with efforts ongoing to control the fires and assess the full extent of the damage.
