French Sports Minister Swims in River Seine to Highlight Water Quality Ahead of 2024 Paris Olympics

In a demonstration of the River Seine’s improved water quality ahead of the 2024 Paris Olympics, French Sports Minister Amelie Oudea-Castera took a swim on Saturday. This symbolic act was captured by BFM TV as she briefly swam near the iconic Alexandre III and Invalides bridges. The event aims to assure the public that the Seine is ready to host the triathlon and marathon swimming events scheduled for the upcoming Olympic Games, which will take place from July 26 to August 11.

The initiative to clean the Seine, once known for its pollution, has been a significant part of Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo’s campaign. Hidalgo has also pledged to swim in the river to celebrate its readiness for the Olympics and to further underscore the success of the cleanup efforts. The Seine, which last hosted Olympic events in the 1900 Paris Games, is now poised to become a central venue once again, reflecting the city’s commitment to environmental improvements and sustainable practices in preparation for the global event.
