In a tragic maritime incident, nine of the 16-member crew of the Comoros-flagged oil tanker “Prestige Falcon” have been rescued after the vessel capsized off the coast of Oman on Monday. Officials confirmed on Wednesday that one crew member was found dead, while the search for the remaining six crew members continues.
The “Prestige Falcon,” a 117-meter oil product tanker, was en route to the Yemeni port of Aden when it capsized near Oman’s major industrial port of Duqm. The tanker had a crew comprising 13 Indians and three Sri Lankans. The cause of the capsizing remains unknown.
Oman’s Maritime Security Centre announced the successful rescue of ten crew members, nine of whom were found alive. “Tragically, one crew member was found deceased,” the centre stated on X. Details about the incident and the ongoing search operation remain sparse.
A spokesperson for the Indian Navy, who is assisting in the search and rescue operations, reported that eight of the rescued crew members are Indian, while one is Sri Lankan. “The search and rescue by Indian and Omani assets is being conducted under challenging weather conditions, with rough seas and strong winds complicating efforts,” the spokesperson said.
Indian government officials have reiterated their commitment to continue searching for the missing crew members in the affected area.
The port of Duqm, located on Oman’s southwest coast, is strategically important due to its proximity to significant oil and gas projects. The incident has drawn attention to the maritime safety challenges in the region.
