Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has proposed changing the date for the next US presidential debate, suggesting it be held on Fox News on September 4, instead of the previously agreed date of September 10. Trump wants the debate to take place in Pennsylvania with a full arena audience and to follow the rules of the first debate with President Joe Biden who recently dropped his re-election bid.
The campaign for Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris has strongly opposed this proposal, accusing Trump of trying to avoid the debate. Michael Tyler, the Harris campaign communications director, stated that Trump is “running scared” and should commit to the original date. Tyler emphasized that Harris would be present on September 10 to address the national audience regardless of Trump’s participation.
Trump’s suggestion came shortly after the Democratic National Committee launched an ad campaign mocking him, suggesting he was afraid to debate Harris, especially on the topic of abortion. Despite Trump’s reluctance to debate Harris due to Biden’s withdrawal and subsequent endorsement of Harris, she secured the necessary delegate votes to clinch the Democratic nomination.
Harris is ready for the debate even if Trump does not show up and her campaign is open to discussing further debates. Recent polls indicate a close race between Harris and Trump with the upcoming debate being a critical event in the election.
