The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has implemented new age verification regulations to further restrict youth access to tobacco products, as part of its ongoing efforts to combat underage tobacco use. Beginning September 30, 2024, retailers will be required to check photo identification for anyone under 30 who is purchasing tobacco products, including e-cigarettes. This raises the previous mandatory ID check age from 27 to 30. The rule aims to enhance age verification procedures and make it more difficult for underage individuals to buy tobacco products.
The FDA has also revised vending machine regulations, now banning the sale of tobacco products through vending machines in any location where individuals under 21 are allowed. This expands the existing restriction, which previously applied only to locations where those under 18 were permitted.
These updates are part of the FDA’s larger strategy to reduce health risks associated with smoking and prevent youth addiction. Brian King, director of the FDA’s Center for Tobacco Products, stressed that limiting youth access to tobacco is key to reducing long-term addiction and related health issues.
