On Friday, security forces from Guatemala and El Salvador arrived in Port-au-Prince to reinforce a U.N. backed mission addressing Haiti’s deepening gang crisis. The 75 Guatemalan troops and eight Salvadoran soldiers were welcomed by Haitian officials including Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé.
“These troops are here to strengthen the fight against gangs and illegal weapons,” Haiti’s government stated.
Guatemala’s President Bernardo Arévalo has promised more personnel while El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele pledged helicopters and additional soldiers citing confidence in tackling Haiti’s escalating violence.
Led by Kenya since mid-2024, the mission still lacks the pledged 3,100 international troops with gang-controlled territories growing and violence displacing thousands. Experts stress the need for immediate global action to restore order.
