Ghana won Afcon trophy in 1963, 1965, 1978 and 1982.
According to Sports journalist, Saddick Adams who reports for Angel FM, the replica of Africa Cup of Nations trophies given to Ghana by CAF cannot be found.
According to him, he tried his best to trace the trophies before the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations but was told they were missing.
“Before the 2019 Afcon, I asked questions about the four trophies that we have won and I was told that we lost the trophies during the coup when the National Sports Council office was ransacked ” Saddick said on his programme on AngelFM as disclosed by Pulse.com.gh
Countries are given replica of the trophy when they emerge as winners according to CAF’s rules on permanent basis. And they are allowed to keep the original until the next Afcon tournament.
African countries are however allowed to keep the original trophy forever when they win it three times, something achieved by only three countries: Cameroon, Ghana and Egypt.
“You know that CAF gives you a replica when you win the trophy but then you can get a golden one when you win it for keeps (three times)” he said.
But in 2019, Ghana Ministry of Youth and Sports announced that the 1978 trophy will be used for exhibitions in the 2023 African games in Ghana.
