According to him, he decided to pretend he was going to take the penalty to ease the pressure off the actual taker, Kai Havertz. Chelsea had an extra time penalty after both teams played 1-1 through to the 1st minute to stoppage time.
To distract the attention of Palmeiras players, Ceser Azpilicueta picked up the ball and stood by the penalty spot. Palmeiras players quickly surround him while he walks towards the penalty spot, thinking he was the one going to kick the penalty.
Azpilicueta later gave the ball to Kai Havertz who scored the winning goal.
