Ecowas suspend Guinea, demand immediate release of President Alpha Conde.
Economic Community of West African States, Ecowas has suspended Guinea after the country’s military ousted the president out of office on Sunday, September 5. A group of soldiers led by Colonel Mamady Doumbouya arrested Alpha Conde at the Presidential Palace. Guns were fired sporadically on that day. Speaking on the matter, Chairman of Ecowas, President Nana Akufo-Addo of Ghana said the action of the military “violates the charter of Ecowas”
Speaking to his colleague leaders in the region as Ecowas chairman during a virtual conference, President Akufo-Addo insists the coup was unnecessary.
Ecowas has therefore called for the immediate release of President Alpha Conde. The bloc has also called on Guinea to return to “normal constitutional order “
“Ecowas has decided to suspend Guinea from all of its decision making bodies. Guinea must put in place a process that will allow a rapid return to a normal constitutional order” Alpha Barry, Foreign Minister of Burkina Faso said during the summit.
