Ethiopia expels 7 top UN officials for meddling in its internal affairs.
The Ethiopian government has given a 72 hour ultimatum to 7 United Nations officials to leave the country. Ethiopia says these UN officials are ‘meddling in its internal affairs’. Ethiopia is currently facing a growing humanitarian crisis. There is currently massive starvation in Ethiopia’s Tigray region as war intensifies. The 7 officials include United Nations Childrens Fund, UNICEF and United Nations Office for the coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, UNOCHA. The officials have been declared “persona non grata” and have been given 72hours to leave the country.
“MFA Ethiopia declared persona non grata for some UN humanitarian agencies in Ethiopia for meddling in the internal affairs of the country. They must leave the country within the next 72hours ” The statement read, mentioning the names and positions of these United Nations officials
United Nations agencies have been publicly pleading with Ethiopian government to what UN describes as a ‘de-facto blockade ‘ of the region where thousands of people eg. Children, pregnant women etc. are living in inhumane conditions.
