Ghana police arrest 21 LGBTQ + activists at ‘unlawful’ conference in HO

Ghana yesterday picked up 21 LGBTQI activists for unlawfully organizing a conference in HO, the capital of Volta Region.

A statement released by Ghana police on their Twitter account confirmed that at least 21 gay activists have been arrested.

21 persons including 16 females and 5 males suspected to be lesbians, gays, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex were today 21 May, remanded into police custody by the HO circuit court for unlawful assembly at the nurses and midwives hotel HO

The statement posted by Ghana police reads.

Activities of LGBTQ have been rejected by many Ghanaians. Earlier this year, one of their office which was opened in Tesano in Accra was closed down by authorities. Many Ghanaians including some members of parliament like Hon. Sam Dzata George of Ningo Prampram have all kicked against the legalization the act in Ghana.

Sam George, on national television declared how he’s against the act because it is not in line with our cultural practices and heritage.
