According to the Speaker, members of Parliament in the house at that time were 138. He revealed that members present in the house were more than 137 before he put the question for the approval of the or rejection of the budget.
Hon. Alban Bagbin posted on his Facebook page to clarify humours that the budget was unlawfully rejected.
“Please let it be known that there were more than 137 MPs on the floor when I put the questions for the approval or rejection of the Economic Policy and Financial Statement of the government for the 2022 financial year often referred to as the budget for 2022. After the rejection of the request by the Minister of Finance to be given more time to consult the expanded leadership of Parliament, one member of the Majority Caucus came to sit on the last row of the seats on the Majority side by the side door facing the Speake’s lobby. That took the number of attendance at that moment to 138” the Speaker said.
He earlier revealed that for the first time in Ghana’s democracy, the nation is experiencing a hung parliament, noting there is no majority. “It is a hung parliament of 137-137, the independent who decided to do business with one side of the Majority, there is no majority in this house”
“So when the question was put by me to the plenary, Hon. Gentleman remained silent. I am asking Ghanaians to please disregard the survival antics by the ever loquacious leader of the Majority Group in today’s hung Parliament. The budget was lawfully rejected” the Speaker posted.
