Libya military issues arrest warrant for Gaddafi’s son, Saif Al-Islam over alleged ties with Russian mercenaries

Authorities of Libya and its military have issued arrest warrant for Saif Al-Islam Gaddafi, son of former leader, Muammar Gaddafi who was killed in 2011.

The news uncovered by BBC investigative team has it that, Saif Al-Islam who happens to be the son of Muammar Gaddafi is linked to Wagner, a mercenary Organization based in Russia. And this is the reason prosecutors of Libya want him to be arrested. Few weeks ago, Saif Al-Islam appeared from absencia to announce that he was interested in the leadership of the Arab Nation, Libya. Al-Islam went into hiding after his father’s demise. There have been several reports that he had been killed years ago only for him to return.

The Russian Wagner group was first noticed in 2014 when it was backing pro Russian separatists during the conflict in Eastern Ukraine. Snce then, it had been directly involved in other regions including Sudan, Syria, Central African Republic and Mozambique according to BBC.
BBC also revealed that Russian fighters first appeared in Libya in 2019 when they joined with forces of War Lord General, Khalifa Hafter, where they attacked the United Nations government in Tripoli. Both parties later called for a ceasefire late in 2020.

Saif Al-Islam was also captured in 2011 after his father died and was held in Zintan for six years. He was sentenced to death during detention by a court in Tripoli over the killing of protesters in 2011. Reports say he’s likely to be hiding in Zintan.
