Pirates Actor Tamayo Perry Fatally Attacked by Shark While Surfing in Hawaii

Tamayo Perry, known for his role in Pirates of the Caribbean, tragically died following a shark attack while surfing in Hawaii. The 49-year-old passed away on Sunday afternoon, as confirmed by Honolulu’s emergency services in a press briefing.

The incident occurred around 1 p.m. local time at Malaekahana Beach. Despite rapid response and efforts to save him, Perry, who was also an experienced lifeguard, was declared dead after being brought to shore by jet ski.

Perry had notable appearances in various productions, including Lost, Hawaii Five, Blue Crush and Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle and he also featured in a Coca-Cola commercial. Hailing from the east side of Oahu, Perry had been a professional surfer for over a decade and worked as an instructor at Oahu Surfing Experience.

His biography on the surfing school’s site highlights his encounter with “the world’s deadliest wave” and a previous “near-fatal experience” due to another’s lack of awareness, though details were not specified.

Acting Honolulu Ocean Safety chief Kurt Lager described Perry as a beloved lifeguard, recognized locally and globally for his infectious personality. Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi echoed this, noting Perry’s status as a legendary waterman and a cherished community member. Blangiardi also requested privacy for Perry’s family during their time of grief.
