World Leaders Congratulate Iran’s Pezeshkian on Presidential Victory

Masoud Pezeshkian has won the Iranian presidential election, becoming the country’s ninth elected president. With 53.7% of the votes (16.3 million ballots), he defeated his rival Saeed Jalili, who received 44.3% (13.5 million ballots). Pezeshkian has pledged to open Iran to the world and emphasized unity among Iranians in his victory speech.

World leaders extended their congratulations, expressing hopes for strengthened bilateral relations. Russian President Vladimir Putin anticipated constructive cooperation, while Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman emphasized deepening ties following the re-establishment of diplomatic relations in 2023. Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev invited Pezeshkian to visit, highlighting the importance of their relationship.

China’s President Xi Jinping looked forward to advancing their strategic partnership and India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi aimed to further warm bilateral relations. Iraqi President Abdul Latif Rashid, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Kuwait’s Emir Sheikh Mishal al-Ahmad al-Sabah, Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad, and other regional leaders also congratulated Pezeshkian, expressing hopes for strengthened cooperation and stability in the region.

This early election was held due to the death of President Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash in May 2023.
